80's Hit Song Review: "Let's Go Out Tonight" by Nile Rodgers (1985)

80's Hit Song Review: "Let's Go Out Tonight" by Nile Rodgers (1985), U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Peak Position No. 88

The review: Rodgers's only ever solo hit from his 2nd and last album, B-Movie Matinee is absolutely fun and brilliant. With catchy as heck synths, awesome guitar lines, and even Japanese female rapping and stuttering, this song is definitely a lost gem from the mid 80's.

Final rating:10/10

  1. It didn't seem possible that Nile Rodgers only landed one Hot 100 hit as a solo artist, but of course you were right. Great single. Should've gone Top 40.

    1. Three other INCREDIBLY well known singers and musicians who only had one EXTREMELY minor blip on the Hot 100 chart in the 80’s, even lower than this tune’s No. 88: Grace Slick’s “Seasons” (No. 95, 1980), Jay Black’s “The Part of Me That Needs You Most” (No. 98, 1980), and Colin Hay’s “Hold Me” (1986, No. 99, but didn’t chart until a year later in 1987, I believe).

The Colin Hay and Jay Black songs are GREAT and I have absolutely NO clue as to why “Hold Me” lasted for only one week at No. 99 on the Charts.

That being said, the Grace Slick Song, although highly unique and original, is a complete stinker in my opinion. It sounds like a Russian folk song from the 17 or 1800’s with a ton of LA LA LA LA LA’s repeated in the end. I’m not surprised that tune stalled so low. However, the album was a success, peaking at No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 200 Album Charts.
